The power of nightmares (BBC - Adam Curtis)

This film explores the origins in the 1940s and 50s of Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East, and Neoconservatism in America, parallels between these movements, and their effect on the world today. From the introduction to Part 1:

Flight from death - The quest for immortality

In the 1960s and 1970s, the polarization of the political situation of the USA was becoming acute with the Vietnam War abroad and civil rights at home being but the most obvious issues. For the youth political movement, the seemingly ineffectual methods of peaceful protest and resistance led to the rise of an idealistic faction that want a more extreme approach that the Establishment could not ignore. This faction, called the Weather Underground, attempted to team up with the Black Panthers to violently confront the US government that started with street riots and escalating to bombing government targets. Thorough archival footage and interviews of the veterans of both sides of this conflict, this film covers the resistance movement's campaign of selective violence through this period until changing times and disillusionment brought it to an end while the FBI used unethical and illegal methods to hasten it.

Das Einsatzkommando Cobra, direkt dem österreichischen Innenministerium unterstellt, wird gerufen bei Geiselnahmen, Amokläufen, Festnahmen von Gewaltverbrechern, Terrorangriffen und beim Personenschutz prominenter Persönlichkeiten. Süddeutsche Zeitung TV bekam eine Sondergenehmigung, die Kandidaten durch das gesamte Auswahlverfahren zu begleiten. Das Leben der etwa 400 Cobra-Polizisten ist geprägt von Training: Tauchen, Sprengen, Fallschirmspringen und Nahkampf; dazu kommen noch die Einsätze: 400 Festnahmen, 130 Hausdurchsuchungen und 1400 Personenschutzeinsätze allein im Jahre 2008. Um diesen harten Job auch bewältigen zu können, werden beim Cobra Aufnahmeverfahren am Ende nur 36 Polizisten aus über 200 Bewerbern aufgenommen.
