The Cold War (BBC - 5 part History File)

A five-part unit following on from `The Soviets'. Dramatic reconstructions, archive footage and documentary evidence focus on the crises of the Cold War from 1945 to the late 1980s, emphasising the Soviet perspective throughout. The programmes are:

Part 1:
`Berlin (1945-1948)' the memoirs of Gregory Klimov, an officer in the Soviet Military Administration in post-war Germany provide an unusual insight into the early years of the Cold War;

Part 2:
`Hungary (1956)' after Stalin's death in 1953, Krushchev talked of a Soviet "thaw" and yet in 1956 he crushed the Hungarian uprising in a display of military brutality;

Part 3:
`US and the arms race (1956-1960)' explores the Cold War arms and space races through the story of Gary Powers;

Part 4:
the US spy-plane pilot shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960; `The Cuban missile crisis (1962)' the nuclear stand-off between Kennedy and Krushchev in October 1962;

Part 5:
`Evil empire (1980s)' charts the extraordinary events of the 1980s.
