Project Azorian was the CIA's audacious attempt to recover the wreck of the Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129. From its loss in March 1968 until the summer of 1974, the Soviets were ignorant of the US Navy's successful mission to locate and photograph the wreck and that the CIA was preparing the largest salvage attempt in history. At the height of the Cold War, K-129 offered the US a cornucopia of unique intelligence targets.
